National Capital Chapter Safari Club International
The National Capital Chapter has awarded 26 scholarships that enable teachers to attend the American Wilderness Leadership School in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Thanks to SCI members and to the SCI Foundation, over 10 million young people have learned from more than 4,000 educators trained at the Wyoming Awls facility in environmental and conservation education. In week long programs, these educators are enriched by field activity, including outdoor education lesson plans, plant identification, map and compass use, firearm safety, fly tying, survival training, and archery.
They also meet with experts trained in wildlife management and conservation. Additional AWLS programs for teachers are offered in Maine, Minnesota and Iowa with all AWLS programs available for graduate credit.
Kin Comrie, a recent graduate had this to say:
"The leaders of the “AWLS” program and their frenetic energy and enthusiasm proved to be my motivation. We were presented classes in photography, fly tying & fly fishing, orienteering, rock climbing, sport shooting, survival and “Safari in a Box,” just to name a few interactive resources that would entice any student or adult. Additionally, each and every day we were instructed by guest speakers who specialized in range management, wildlife biology, Wyoming game and fisheries, the elk refuge, and fire management.
As the week concluded I realized that I had been provided everything I needed to begin my task. I had acquired sixteen pounds of great “outdoor” educational nuggets and an abundance of resources for my classroom. It is my responsibility from this point on to educate children not just about music but about their world around them." full story & photos
